When the .NET generic top-level domain extension was initially introduced in 1985, along with the first domain name extensions on the web, it was meant to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure firms. Considering that there were no special conditions about the usage of the top-level domain extension, though, .NET domains were acquired and used for different purposes and by a large number of people. This extension is a good alternative to dot COM, notably if the desired domain with the latter domain extension is not available for registration.
