Password Protected Directories
Find out how to set up a protected and user-only area in your web site with password-protected directories.
A password-protected directory or area is a folder that may be accessed when a username and a password are entered, so no unauthorized people can look at its content. This option may be used for the primary folder of a certain Internet site or just for a certain subfolder based upon the needs you have. As an example, when you are creating a new Internet site and you do not want people to see it prior to it being completely ready, you may want to restrict the access to it entirely, while if you want only some people to be able to access particular files, you are able to password-protect only a particular folder, while the rest of the Internet site may be seen by anybody. In either case, a “403 Forbidden” error page shall appear if the login details the visitor enters are not accurate. Even a direct link to a file shall not work given that any folder above it is password-protected.
Password Protected Directories in Shared Website Hosting
Setting up a password-protected area will take just a couple of mouse clicks and a few seconds if you host your Internet sites within a shared website hosting account with us. You will not have to do anything challenging - you'll have to select a domain/subdomain, to choose which folder under it should be secured, and then to type in the login name and password which will be used to access that folder. When a number of people require their own login details, there won't be a problem to make several different usernames with access to the exact same folder. All secured folders will appear with a padlock icon in the File Manager section, so you will always know where this option is active. If you want to disable the protection feature for any folder, you can deactivate it from the very same section of the CP in which you have enabled it.
